Clyde - James T. (Jim) White, 79, passed away on Tuesday, January 22, 2019 at Mission Hospital Memorial Campus.
He was a native of Buncombe County and a son of the late Leaman and Rosalee (Chastain) White. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Verner White of Black Mountain, Wayne White of Ft. Myers, FL and Glen Ray White of Candler; three sisters, Lorene W. Hollifield, Helen W. Jones, and Louise W. Brown, all of Candler.
Surviving are his wife, Linda A. White of the home; a son, Allen B. Scroggs (Melissa) and a granddaughter, Gracie Scroggs of Canton, GA. He is also survived by two sisters, Judy W. Shuler and Sandra W. Lawing (Garvin) of Asheville and one brother, Carroll White (Pat) of Candler; one sister-in-law, Joyce White of Candler; and several nieces and nephews.
He graduated from Enka High School in 1958 where he was co-captain of the football team and voted "Most Athletic" his senior year. He enjoyed attending all class reunions and re-connecting with former classmates. He was a US Army veteran and retired in 2004 from Blue Ridge Paper, Waynesville Plant.
He was an active member of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Waynesville, where he served as an elder. He was also actively involved in the Men’s Tuesday Morning Prayer Breakfast in Waynesville. Even as the group decreased due to poor health requiring relocation, he continued going to Bojangles on Tuesday mornings for Bible reading and prayer when he was the only one in attendance. He was a sports enthusiast and thoroughly enjoyed watching his beloved UNC Tarheels, as well as the Carolina Panthers and the Atlanta Braves.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon on Saturday, January 26, 2019, in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverends Larry Jones and Allen Scroggs officiating. Internment will follow at Crawford/Ray Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Covenant Presbyterian Church, 166 Pigeon Street, Waynesville, NC 28786.
