A. Mccann

May 3, 1936 — March 7, 2013

Mr. A. Richard McCann, 76, of Candler, NC passed away peacefully at the John F. Keever, Jr., Solace Center in Asheville, NC on Thursday, March, 7, 2013, with his wife, Liz at his side.
Dick was born on May 3, 1936, in Newark, NJ, the son of the late Charles P. and Martha Kaufold McCann. Dick's father was a prominent leader in New Jersey politics. Dick was a graduate of St. Benedict's Prep in Newark, NJ and of Marietta College in Marietta, OH. He also served as a Reservist in the US Army.
Dick had a successful career as a securities broker/trader which spanned more than 40 years. After positions in various investment firms in Boston, New York, and Miami, Dick moved to California where he assumed the role of Vice President and Co-Manager of equity trading with Bank of America. Several years later he joined Montgomery Securities as a Partner. In 1993, he relocated to St. Petersburg, FL where he served as a Vice President at Raymond James & Associates, and later as Vice President of Ryan, Beck and Co. He relocated to Atlanta, Georgia to become Senior Vice President and Equity Trading Manager at Wachovia Securities, the following year became a Partner at Florida-based Spartan Securities. In 2004, he and his wife, Liz moved to Asheville, NC to their dream home in the mountains.
Dick lived a charmed and colorful life that was filled with both adventure and adversity. A man of great stature and presence, he had wide-ranging interests and intellectual curiosity. He was a voracious reader, an expert puzzler and a world traveler. He loved a good time and was known for his fun-loving personality, his charisma and charm. He had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to get a rise out of friends and colleagues with gag jokes and shenanigans. St. Patrick's Day was one of his favorite holidays, and each year his typically raucous colleagues on the trading desk were stunned to silence by the surprise visit of a blaring bagpiper in full regalia.
Dick had the ability to maintain strength and perspective despite enduring personal tragedies. The premature losses of close relatives, including a brother, Charles Paul, Jr.; a spouse, Kathie; and a son, Matthew, as well as numerous close friends which affected him deeply, but did not diminish his tremendous energy, enthusiasm and sense of humor.
Dick had a loving family and an extensive network of friends throughout his life. He is survived by his devoted wife of 17 years, Liz; his son, Richard (Bhavani) of Montclair, NJ; stepson, Scott (Tracy) Thomson of Alpharetta, GA; stepdaughter, Amy Thomson of Candler, NC; grandchildren, Charles and Kieran McCann; Spencer, Adam and Paige Thomson; and Jesse Weiss; sister, Madeline (Chuck) Dolan; father in law, Don (Irmagene) Ahlfeld; brother in law, John (Mary) Ahlfeld; and his children's mother, Mary (Barron) Cashdollar; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
