Waynesville-Abraham Ramirez Fernandez, age 75, died February 17, 2005 at Haywood Regional Medical Center. He was born November 4, 1929 in Uvalde, Texas. He was the son of the late I. A. Fernandez and Irene Ramirez Fernandez. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Dora Martinez of Ft. Worth, Texas. He was a U.S. Army veteran. He served as Chaplain for VFW Post 5202 for 20 years and was a volunteer interpreter for the Waynesville Police Department, the Sheriff's Department and the N.C. Highway Patrol. He was a member of East Waynesville Baptist Church and a charter member of the Waynesville Civilian Police Academy. He was retired from the USDA Forest Service in 1994. He is survived by his wife, Donna Blanton Fernandez; two sons, Dexter Fernandez and his wife, Ellen, of Rio Linda California; Roger Fernandez and his wife, Janet, and twin grandson, Aaron and Joshua Fernandez of Waynesville. He is also survived by three brothers, Leo, Orlando, and Fernando Fernandez of San Antopnio, TX; two sisters, Delia Sabedra of Dallas, TX and Patricia Garza of Lytrle, TX and many nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 22, 2005 in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Jay Jones and Reverend Chan Chandler officiating. Military services will be conducted by VFW Post 5202 and American Legion Post 47. The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m. on Monday, February 21, 2005 at the funeral home, and at other times, at the home of the son, Roger, at 80 Hyacinth Lane, Waynesville. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Ratcliffe Cove Baptist Church Youth Fund, 1175 Ratcliffe Cove Road, Waynesville, NC 28786.
