Adele Powell

October 30, 1932 — July 21, 2011

Waynesville, Adele Blankenship Powell, age 78, of Meadowind Court, passed away on Thursday, July 21, 2011 at her residence. A native of Yancey County, she was a former resident of Norfolk, Virginia before moving to Haywood County in 1966. She was the daughter of the late Zebulon and Geneva Ray Blankenship and was also preceded in death by nine brothers and sisters. Adele was a graduate of Cecil's Business College, a homemaker, and a member of First Baptist Church of Waynesville where she taught Sunday-School and Vacation Bible School. "Although she was a mother of two sons, she adopted the world and was a woman of grace." She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Carl Bruce Powell, Sr.; two sons, Carl Powell, Jr. and his wife, Val, of Waynesville and Jamie Powell and his wife, Kellie, of Asheville; one sister, Eloise Sawyer, of Weaverville; two brothers, Reverend Jay Blankenship of Weaverville and Reverend Earl Blankenship of Asheville; seven grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 24, 2011 at First Baptist Church of Waynesville with Reverend Dr. Robert Prince and Reverend Matt Pruett officiating. Entombment will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park Mausoleum. The family will receive friends from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. on Saturday at Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services of Waynesville. Memorials may be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, P.O. Box 10000, Dept. 300, Memphis, TN 38148.
