Al Schmidt, Jr.

Waynesville, Alfred Charles Schmidt, Jr., age 86, passed away on Saturday, January 18, 2014 at MedWest-Haywood. A native of Hempstead, New York, he was the son of the late Alfred Charles and Helen White Schmidt. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Schmidt, who died in 2005 and a son, Glenn Schmidt. Al was a United States WWII Army veteran. He was an active member in the Moose Lodge in Waynesville, and was the first Governor in the New Moose Charter Lodge. Al's wife, Frances was the first Senior Regent in the New Moose Charter Lodge. He was an active member in the Loyal Order of Moose Elks, past commander in the American Legion and AMVETS. He also was a member in the Knights of Columbus and the Holy Name Society. Al was a fireman in New York and Florida and was Chief operator in the Water Department. He is survived by a daughter, Linda Nervi (Robert) of Ft. Pierce, Florida; two sons, Robert Allen Schmidt of White Pine, Tennessee and Alfred Charles Schmidt, III of Boynton Beach, Florida; ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 21, 2014 in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Gary Putnam officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 Monday at the funeral home.
