Alice Haley

May 16, 1916 — August 24, 2016

Waynesville, Alice Mae Hurt Richards Haley was a native of Putnam County, born in Eatonton GA on May 16, 1916 to the parentage of the late Andrew "Joe" Hurt and Roberta Dennis. Death came to Mrs. Haley on Wednesday, August 24, 2016 while residing at Quiet Oaks Health Care in Crawford, Georgia after a brief illness. Preceded in death are siblings, Alberta McKinney and Annie Lizzie "Dolly" Garrett; spouses, Collin Richards and Walter Haley; children Bobby Richards (Newark OH), Clara Laguins (Berkeley CA) and Harold Richards (Athens GA). She leaves surviving her son, Lucius Richards (Atlanta GA) as well as a host of relatives including grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. Dedicated to serve the Lord at every church she attended, Alice was a member of Bethel Baptist Church (Watkinsville GA) and an usher/board member at Mt Olive Baptist church (Waynesville NC). A loving and devoted mother, Alice was a great cook---a talent she shared with the Haywood County school district for many years until her retirement. After retirement, her love of caring for children moved her to join the county's Foster Grandparent program where she was recognized for her contributions. She continued to enjoy traveling to visit relatives between North Carolina and Georgia, and attended most of the Hurt-Waller family reunions. She returned to Georgia in 2007 where she was adored by all that knew and loved her. Honored recently for being the first centenarian of 2016 at Quiet Oaks, she was quoted in the local newspaper as saying "I don't think about age and still believe I should be cooking and caring for the children!" She also reflected fondly about the past where "people worked hard and appreciated all that they had and gave all the Glory to God." A memorial service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 3, 2016 at the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Charles Mosley, Jr. officiating. The family will receive friends from 11:00 until 11:45 a.m. at the funeral home. The family of Mrs. Haley would like to express our sincerest appreciation for the thoughtfulness and very kind expressions of sympathy during our time of bereavement.
