Allison Fleetwood, Sr.

February 13, 1930 — November 15, 2010

Allison (Al) Maynard Fleetwood Sr., age 80, died November 15, 2010, in Canton, North Carolina after a battle with cancer fought with courage and grace. Allison was born February 13, 1930, in Jackson, Mississippi to Charles Johnson Fleetwood and Thena Allison Fleetwood. The family soon moved to Memphis, Tennessee. He attended Vanderbilt University and Memphis State University, and graduated with a degree in architecture from The Georgia Institute of Technology. Al served his country as an aviator in the U.S. Marine Corps on active duty and as a reservist for many years, ultimately attaining the rank of Major. During his long and satisfying architectural career, Al was associated with several prominent Atlanta firms, including John Portman and Associates, and traveled extensively with projects across the United States, Southeast Asia and the Carribean. He was active in the American Institute of Architects in various leadership positions. Al was a charter member of St. James United Methodist Church in Atlanta where he served faithfully in many leadership roles, including Chairman of the Administrative Board. He was later involved at St. Luke Episcopal Church in Atlanta, serving as Vestryman prior to his retirement in North Carolina. Al loved music and art and was an avid reader, maintaining a commitment to life-long learning. He was grateful for his children and grandchildren whom he loved, and was very proud of their talents and various endeavors. He is survived by his wife, Cynthia Green Fleetwood; children, Martha Fleetwood Christopher and her husband Jay, Allison Maynard Fleetwood, Jr., Thomas Lovell Fleetwood and his wife Catherine, Howell Jennings Fleetwood, Hunter Blythe Fleetwood; step-children Geoffrey Wayne Vinson, Christopher Sean Vinson and his wife Jana; grandchildren, Martha Allison Christopher, Rebecca Jane Christopher, Elizabeth Ann Christopher, Caroline Sterne Fleetwood, Elizabeth Lovell Fleetwood; step-grandchildren Maia Simone Vinson and Ian Colwyn Vinson. A memorial service will be held at Peachtree Road United Methodist Church in Atlanta, GA on November 21, 2010, at 3:00pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Hospice Building Fund at HRMC Hospice, 560 Leroy George Drive, Clyde, NC 28721.
