Alton Leo Cayton, age 75, died Friday, April 11, 2008 at his residence. He was a native of Beaufort County, NC and a son of the late Alton A. and Lizzie Edwards Cayton. He was preceded in death by a son, Major Leo Bruce Cayton, Ret. United States Army. Leo was employed by the Town of Canton as the first paid fire chief. He retired from the town of Canton with 35 years of service. He attended Canton First Baptist Church and was very active with the Haywood County Rescue Squad. Leo was a United States Army veteran having served during the Korean conflict. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Elizabeth "Bettye" Gunn Cayton; two sons, John Anderson "Andy" Cayton, Sr. of Savannah, GA, and James Leonard "Lynn" Cayton of Canton; one daughter, Kimberly Ann Cayton Hartsell of Candler; six sisters, Juanita Saad of Greenville, NC, Phoebe Mills of Chocowinity, NC, Marie Poore of Washington, NC, Bunnie Rowe, Judy Godley, and Gloria Jean Taylor all of Chocowinity, NC; three brothers, John E. Cayton of Maxton, NC, Henry W. Cayton of Greenville, NC, and Cleon Cayton of Chocowinity, NC; five grandchildren, Dr. Sabrina Seib, Mikele Cayton-Woody, John Cayton, Jr., Gunnar Cayton, and Tyler Miller; and one great-grandson, Grant Cayton-Woody. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 15, 2008 in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Bruce Cayton and Reverend Dr. Jack B. Sammons officiating. Fire department honors will be conducted by the Buncombe County Firefighters Honor Guard. Burial will follow at Crawford/Ray Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 9:00 p.m. Monday evening. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Haywood County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 1275, Canton, NC 28716.
