Alvin Jones

Woolwich, Maine-Alvin J. Jones, age 75, of Murphys Corner Road, died Tuesday, January 25, 2005 at Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick, Maine. He was born in Clyde, NC on May 28, 1929, a son of Erastus and Tennie Rhinehart Jones. He was educated in the Clyde schools and graduated from Clyde High School. In 1946 he joined the U. S. Navy and served for 22 ½ years retiring as a Chief Petty Officer in 1968. His military career included several tours in New Zealand and Antarctica with Operation Deep Freeze, as well as a tour of duty at the North Pole. On March 21, 1959 he married Annette D. Bailey. Following his retirement from the Navy, they moved to Glassboro, New Jersey. He worked as Food Service Officer at the Phila Naval Station for almost 19 years. In 1986 they returned to Maine and built their dream home, a log house in Woolwich, Maine. He was an active member of the Masons, joining the Clyde Lodge #453 in Clyde, NC in 1957, the Glassboro Lodge in 1985, and the Polar Star Lodge in Bath, Maine in 1987. He was past Worshipful Master in Glassboro and Polar Star Lodge in 1992. He was also a member of all the York Rite Bodies of Bath; a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason in the Valley of Rockland, Maine; and a member of the Genesta Chapter #73 Order of the Eastern Star. He was a member of the Bath United Methodist Church; National Association of Retired Federal Employees; and Old Antarctica Explorer's Association. He was a member and former Chair of Woolwich Democratic Committee and had served on the State Rules Committee. Mr. Jones enjoyed camping, playing cards, antiquing and flea marketing and traveled extensively, especially enjoying Alaska, Mexico, Scotland, and cruising the Caribbean. He is predeceased by a sister, Margaret Jones and a brother, Marshall Jones. Surviving are his wife of 45 years, Annette B. Jones of Woolwich, Maine; a son, Donald E. and his wife Tamela Jones of Franklin, NC, three daughters, Pamela S. and her husband, Peter Adams of Haddon Heights, NJ, Barbara J. and her husband, Thomas Williamson of Blue Anchor, NJ, and Alison D. Jones of Washington D.C.; two brothers, Charles Ray Jones of Bristol, VA and Alden Reeves Jones of Ocala, FL; four sisters, Matral Green of Mary Esther, FL, Barindena Dolassek of Clyde, NC, Lucy Weatherholtz of Jacksonville, FL, and Jean Sluder of Candler, NC; four grandchildren; and one great-grandson. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 5, 2005 at Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services of Canton. Private burial will be held at Fincher's Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Oxford Masonic Children's Home, 600 College Street, Oxford, NC 27565.
