Alwayne Claybrook

Waynesville, NC, Alwayne McClure Claybrook, age 77, formerly of Meadowlark Lane, died on Monday, September 29, 2008. A native of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late Claude Clinton and Goolie Hooper McClure. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Miriam M. Sanderson and one brother, Claude "Bud" McClure. A graduate of Waynesville Township High School in 1949, she was an active member of the 49er's Breakfast Club. She received her teaching degree from Berea College in Kentucky and taught for 25 years in many school systems in Virginia, retiring in 1993. She was a member of several community and professional organizations at both the local and state levels and was named Virginia's Home Economics Teacher of the Year in 1986. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Waynesville and faithfully served in her churches, including Westhampton Baptist Church, Richmond, VA; Crozet Baptist Church, Crozet, VA; First Baptist Church, Hopewell, VA; Newington Baptist Church, Gloucester, VA; First Baptist Church, Washington Street, Petersburg, VA; and Williamsburg Baptist Church, Williamsburg, VA. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, W. Lyn Claybrook and her children, Karen and Michael Hatton, of Moseley, VA and their children, Benjamin and Timothy; Steve and Dixie Claybrook of Parker, CO and their children, Brooke Ann, Dalton, Cameron, Cody, and Desiree; Kathy and Billy Healy of Gloucester, VA and their children, Sarah and Rachel; and Anita and Dave Slagle of Fletcher, NC and their children, Olivia and Bobby; and four great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 2, 2008 at First Baptist Church of Waynesville with Reverend Dr. Robert Prince, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at Green Hill Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Michael Hatton, Billy Healy, Dave Slagle, John, Patrick, and Matthew Sanderson, Dan McClure, and Manuel Hooper. Honorary pallbearers will be Carroll, Jimmy, and Wade Hooper, Roy Smathers, Bob Hutcheson, Richard Schwall, Bill Sanderson, Sam Wiggins, Ben Latimer, and Bob Bradley. The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday evening at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 7, 2008 at the Williamsburg Baptist Church, 227 Richmond Road, Williamsburg, VA.
