Amelia Leatherwood

February 16, 1915 — February 6, 2010

Waynesville, Amelia Bradley Leatherwood, age 94, of 68 Hillside Terrace Drive, passed away on Saturday, February 06, 2010 at Haywood Regional Medical Center following a brief illness. A native of Polk County, she was a former resident of Henderson County and had lived in Haywood County since 1941. She was the daughter of the late Harrison J. and Lexie Laughter Bradley. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence B. Leatherwood, who died in 1984, as well as one brother and four sisters. She graduated from Edneyville High School and was valedictorian of her senior class. She also graduated from Western Carolina University where she earned her Master's Degree in Business Education and was a member of the basketball team and a cheerleader. Amelia taught in the public school systems of Henderson and Haywood County for 32 years during which she returned to Western Carolina University where she earned her Master's Degree in Counseling. She was an active member of First United Methodist Church of Waynesville, where she served on numerous committees. She was a volunteer for Meals-on-Wheels of Haywood County and was also a member of Haywood County Home Demonstration Club, NCAE, and the NEA. She is survived by two sons, Larry Leatherwood and his wife, Julia, and Ron Leatherwood and his wife, Laura, of Waynesville; one sister, Myrtle Smith, of Mills River; three grandchildren, Brad and Linc Leatherwood, and Brooke Nickol and her husband, Josh; and five great grandchildren, Jacob Leatherwood, Ben, Luke and Grace Nikol, and Lexie Underwood; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 9, 2010 at First United Methodist Church of Waynesville with Reverend Sanford L. Giles, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Monday at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville.
