Canton-Andy Gentry, age 79 of 71 Harkins Cove Road, died Wednesday, November 3, 2004 with his wife and children by his side. He was a native of Madison County but had lived all his life in Haywood County. He was the son of the late Joe and Bertie Brown Gentry and was also preceded in death by one brother, Fred Gentry, two sisters, Essie Church and Mae Cloer and one granddaughter, Amanda Edwards. He retired from Haywood County Schools as a custodian with 18 years of service and attended Canton Church of God of Prophecy. He was known as "Haywood County's Handyman". He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Kate Nelson Gentry of Canton, three daughters Carolyn Henson and her husband Tony of Canton, Anita Edwards of Sylva and Robin Fox of Clyde, one son, Keith Gentry and his wife Deneene of Clyde, one sister Alice Moore of Hot Springs, 7 grandchildren Tonya Sluder, Amy Miller, Chad Henson, Andy Joe Fox, Chris Fox, Ryan Gentry and Teia Gentry and 5 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, November 6, 2004 at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services. Reverend Curtis Stump and Reverend Ricky Gibson will officiate. Burial will follow at Bon-A-Venture Cemetery on Old Clyde Road. The family will receive friends from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the home. Serving as pallbearers will be Chris and Andy Joe Fox, Ryan Gentry, Roger Edwards, Michael Sluder, Tim Rogers, Danny Miller and Chad Henson. Memorials may be made to Alzheimers Disease Association, Western Carolina Chapter, Mountain Region Office, 31 College Place, Suite D320, Asheville, NC 28801-2644. The family would like to give a special thanks to the nurses and staff of the 2nd floor of Canton Christian Convalescent Center.
