Ann Powers

ASHEVILLE, NC Ann Elizabeth Sutherland Powers of Black Mountain, N.C., died Dec. 9, 2008, at Mission Hospital after pulmonary complications she had battled for several months. Born in Newport News, Va., June 21, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Arthur Goodwin and Grace Davis Sutherland. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Beckham Powers, who was vice president and general business manager of Scripps-Howard Newspapers and former business manager of the Knoxville News Sentinel. She was also preceded in death by a brother, A.G. Sutherland Jr. and his wife, Sarah, of Wilmington, N.C.; two sisters Carolyn Shackelford of Birmingham Ala. and Grace Philpott and her husband, Hubert, of Lexington N.C. She was a graduate of Old Knoxville High School, class of 1938, and attended the University of Tennessee where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority. She was the last president of the old Staub Elementary School Parent-Teachers Association and the first president of the new Fort Sanders Elementary PTA. She was an Honorary Life Member of Presbyterian Women, a former Deacon and Elder, and Stephens Minister at Sequoyah Hills Presbyterian Church in Knoxville. An active volunteer at Ft. Sanders Hospital, she was a Pink Lady for 50 years. She was also active at Ramsey House Plantation in Knoxville and a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow. She was a member of the Dixie Highway Garden Club and of the Association for the Preservation of Tennessee Antiquities Board. Survivors include two sons, Frank Beckham Powers Jr. and his wife. Kim, of Waynesville, N.C, and Arthur Sutherland Powers and his wife, Fran, of Johnson City; one brother-in-law, E. Hugh Shackelford, Birmingham. Ala.; four grandchildren, Frank Beckham Powers III and his wife, Heather, and John Pike Powers and his wife, Melissa, all of Kennesaw, Ga., Erin Sutherland Powers of Knoxville and Logan Margaret Powers of Atlanta; three great-grandchildren, Blake Beckham Powers, Caroline Addison Powers and Madeline Anne Powers, all of Kennesaw, and many nieces and nephews. A celebration of her life will be Friday, Dec. 12, 2008, at 2 p.m. in the chapel at Sequoyah Hills Presbyterian Church in Knoxville. The family will receive friends at 1 p.m. in the parlor of the church. A private graveside service will be held at Highland Memorial Cemetery for family and close friends immediately following the service.
