Anne Abernethy

July 29, 1904 — June 25, 2004

Waynesville-Anne Thornburg Abernethy, age 99, died Friday, June 25, 2004 at the Brian Center. She was a native of Lincoln County, NC having lived in Haywood County since 1979. She was the daughter of the late Lee Johnson and Edith Bolick Thornburg. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Hilliard Harrison Hipps and her second husband, John Abernethy, who died in 1961; by four brothers, and by two sisters. She was a retired receptionist with Gaston Memorial Hospital. She was the oldest member of Hazelwood Baptist Church. She is survived by her daughter, Betty H. McCall and her husband, Charles of Waynesville; one granddaughter, Kitty McCall Hampton and her husband, Roger of Waynesville; and two great grandchildren, Kelly B. Hampton of Jacksonville, FL and Amber K. Hampton of St. Petersburg, Florida. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, June 28, 2004 at the Hollywood Cemetery in Gastonia, NC. The Reverend Don Letzring and Reverend W. Bryan Thornburg will officiate. Friends may call at the residence of Betty and Charles McCall, 1004 Brown Avenue, Waynesville, NC 28786. Memorials may be made to Hazelwood Baptist Church, 265 Hazelwood Avenue, Waynesville, NC 28786 or to the First United Methodist Church of Waynesville Building Fund, P.O. Box 838, Waynesville, NC 28786. Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services of Waynesville is in charge of arrangements.
