Anne Chaffee

November 30, 1908 — March 2, 2008

Waynesville, Anne Wilbanks Chaffee, age 99, died on Sunday, March 2, 2008 at Haywood Regional Medical Center. A native of Dalton, Georgia, she had lived in Haywood County for the past 18 years. She was the daughter of the late Meddie Mansfield Wilbanks and Ida Beck Wilbanks. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Adna R. Chaffee, III, who died in 1978; a son, William M. Best; three sisters, Medalyn Allen, Daisy Wilbanks, and Robbie W. Fowler; and a brother, George William "Bud" Wilbanks. She graduated from Edmondson Business School and was employed as a bookkeeper by ECI in St. Petersburg, FL until her retirement in 1971. She was a member of First Baptist Church of St. Petersburg where she was a member of the Seekers Class. She loved being with her family, cooking, and gardening. She is survived by one son, George E. Best, of St. Petersburg, FL; two daughters, Doris B. Grear, of Jacksonville, FL and Linda M. Krege of Waynesville, NC; three step-sons, Adna Chaffee, IV of Hinesville, GA, Jeff Chaffee of VA, Guy Chaffee, of Sanford, ME; one step-daughter, Ethel "Dodie" Haulton, of St. Petersburg, FL; three sisters, Debbie W. Brown and Bette Payne of Dalton, GA and Bertha Russell of Hiram, GA; eleven grandchildren; and several great and great-great grandchildren. Services and burial will be in St. Petersburg, Florida.
