Anne Queen

Canton- Anne Ellen Queen died Sunday, June 12, 2005 at Silver Bluff Nursing Home. She was a daughter of the late Otha Andrew and Effie Mease Queen and was preceded in death by a sister, Mattie Ruth Queen who died on May 28, 2005. Miss Queen graduated from Bethel High School and went to work at Champion for 9 years and then pursued her education at Berea College in Kentucky, attended Southern Baptist Seminary and received her B.D. from Yale Divinity School. She served as assistant chaplain at the University of Georgia from 1948 to 1951 and then worked as college secretary of the American Friends Service Committee in Greensboro for five years. She directed UNC-Chapel Hill's YM-YWCA from 1956 to 1975 and served as its executive secretary and first woman staff chairman. Now known as the Campus Y, the organization was established in 1860 and is the third oldest in the nation on a university campus. She is survived by a sister, Bonnie Mae Queen of Canton and several cousins. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 15, 2005 in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral with the Reverend W.O. Henson and Reverend Stacy Hightower officiating. Burial will follow in Long's Community Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
