Annie Cunningham Phillips Palmer, age 85, passed away Thursday, December 4, 2008, at John F. Keever, Jr. Solace Center in Asheville. A native of Clay County, she was the daughter of the late Paul Benjamin and Sallie Moss Cunningham. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Carroll Preston Phillips who died in 1954; a son, Carroll Rex Phillips, two sisters, Lula Mae Swanson and Ethel Yates; and three brothers, Charles, Cline, and Garland Cunningham. She retired from American Enka with 18 years of service. She attended Elizabeth Chapel United Methodist Church. Annie was well known for her work selling garden vegetables at the Waynesville tailgate market and met many nice people she otherwise would have never known. She is survived by her husband of 35 years, Mark Palmer; a daughter, Nancy Prather of Clyde; a daughter-in-law, Mary Dotson Phillips of Canton; two step daughters, Bonnie Palmer Mashburn and her husband, E. J., and Janie Higgins and her husband, Danny, all of Waynesville; four grandchildren, Laura and Emily Prather, Brad Phillips, and Wendy Blue; a great granddaughter, Peyton Blue; and several step grandchildren and step great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 7, 2008, at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Revered Dr. James Mackey officiating. Burial will follow at Bon-A-Venture Cemetery, Old Clyde Road. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
