Anthony Gumbar

November 19, 1913 — August 30, 2010

Waynesville, Anthony George Gumbar, age 96, passed away on Monday, August 30, 2010 at his residence. Tony was a native of Chicago, Illinois where he resided most of his life and moved to Haywood County in 1989. He was the son of the late Victor and Anna Kutka Gumbar and was also preceded in death by a sister, Stella Gumbar. Tony was a US Army veteran having served during World War II. He was a POW in Germany and received the Purple Heart. He retired from FMC Corporation with 36 years service. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Frances Gumbar, and a daughter, Sandra Lees, and her husband, Donald, of Waynesville. A memorial mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 16, 2010 at St. John's Catholic Church with Father Larry Lomanaco officiating. Military honors will be conducted by VFW Post 5202 and American Legion Post 47. Memorials may be made to Haywood Regional Medical Center Hospice, 560 Leroy George Drive, Clyde, NC
