Bethel - Arthur Hardin Shipman, age 87, died Tuesday, July 31, 2007 at his residence. He was a native and lifelong resident of Haywood County and a son of the late Mark LaFate and Julia Pressley Shipman. He was preceded in death by five sisters and three brothers. Arthur retired from Champion International with 35 years of service and was of the Baptist faith. He loved to fish, hunt and work with his azaleas and rhododendrons. He also volunteered with Meals on Wheels for 12 years. Arthur was a United States veteran of World War II where he was awarded the EAMET Campaign Medal with 3 Bronze Service Stars, the Good Conduct Medal and the Victory Medal. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Ruth Dotson Shipman and several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, August 3, 2007 at Bon-A-Venture Cemetery on the Old Clyde Road with Reverend James Parham officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon until 1:30 p.m. prior to the service at Wells Funeral Home of Canton. Arthur's nephews will serve as pallbearers.
