Artie Rhodarmer Smathers, age 99, passed away on Tuesday, December 30, 2014 at The Homestead in Clyde. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late Claude Baxter and Inez Phillips Rhodarmer. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Lindon M. Smathers, who died in 1991 and a son, Robert Leon Smathers. She was a member of Clyde Central United Methodist Church where she served on the worship committee for 25 years. Artie also enjoyed gardening and working with her flowers. The family wishes to extend a special thanks to the staff of Silver Bluff and The Homestead for the love and care that was given to Artie. She is survived by a daughter, Linda Smathers of Clyde; a son, Lyndon Smathers of Clyde; a sister, Edna Broyles of Canton; two brothers, William Rhodarmer of Canton and C. V. Rhodarmer of Mills River; three grandchildren, Stephanie Willis of Clyde, Kevin Smathers of Raleigh, and Kristen Smathers of Pisgah Forest; three great-grandchildren, Rayna, Michael, and Dylan; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 2, 2015 at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Daniel Gaddy and Reverend James Hart officiating. Burial will follow at Morning Star Community Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
