Barbara Fish

Barbara Carpenter Fish, age 80, passed in the early hours of May 23, 2013, following years of declining health. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late Fred and Berta Hendricks Carpenter. Barbara was a unique pianist in that as a tot, she learned to play the piano "By Ear". She could listen to a song a couple of times and then sit and play it perfectly. Her family band, The Carpenters String Band, were accomplished entertainers in the 40's and 50's, they recorded albums and played in many famous venues. Barbara was a stickler for proper etiquette and manners. She was a professional floral designer as well as a wedding director. She served in leadership positions of the Haywood County Garden Club, Haywood County Home Demonstrations, The Hospital Auxiliary and Canton Area Heart Fund. At Calvary Baptist Church, she was deeply involved in the home mission actions, which aided local shut-ins. She taught several Sunday school classes and made the weekly floral arrangements and decorations for the church. Barbara now resides in heaven. In addition to her husband of 63 years, George Richard Fish, Sr., she is survived by two sons, George Fish, Jr. and his wife, Pattie, of Canton and Garry Fish and his wife, Cindy, of Summerfield; two brothers, Charles Carpenter of Dunn and Wiley Carpenter of Asheville; four grand children, Mandy Roberts and her husband, John, of Canton, Aaron Fish and his wife, Melissa, of Swannanoa, and Jon Partick Fish and Kelly Fish both of Summerfield; and three great grandchildren; Cole and Allie Roberts and Nolan Fish. A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 25, 2013 at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend James A. Meadows officiating. Friends may come early and share their thoughts and memories of Barbara on memorial cards that will be provided. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Canton First Baptist Church Mission Fund, 74 Academy Street, Canton, NC 28716 or to Calvary Baptist Church Mission Fund, 23 Phillips Street, Canton, NC 28716.
