Alexandria, VA, Barbara Shaw Welch a longtime resident of Alexandria, Virginia, passed away on Tuesday, February 11, 2014. She was raised in Nutley, NJ, and was a loving wife to Samuel C. Welch of Waynesville until his death in 1969. Barbara was a graduate of Duke University, she taught for 17 years at the Alexandria Hospital School of Nursing and was a direct descendant of Colonel Robert Love founder of Waynesville. Besides her devotion to her family she was a popular presence in the Waynewood community and the Stratford Women's Club. She was a loving mother of Douglas, Rick, Tom and Mary; an exceptionally devoted grandmother to her seven grandchildren; Conor, Devin, Katherine, Andrew, Sam, Joe and Marco; and a dear friend to so many, her smile, sense of humor, her strength and positive outlook were cherished by all who knew her. A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, February 17, 2014 at Green Hill Cemetery where she will be buried next to her husband. Father Larry LoMonaco will officiate. The family will receive friends from 9:30 until 10:15 prior to the service at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville.
