Bernice Gough

December 18, 1918 — April 24, 2016

Waynesville, Bernice Cowan Gough, 97, passed away on Sunday, April 24, 2016 at Silver Bluff Rehabilitation Center. A native of Jackson County, she was the daughter of the late Bragg and Leona Dowdle Cowan. She was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Robert Paul Gough, who passed away in 2011. Bernice had four sisters, Hannah Allison, Stella Bryson, Ruby Phipps and Francis Gibson. She managed several retail and jewelry stores in Waynesville and was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Waynesville for 64 years. Gardening, canning and tending to her flowers were some of her favorite things to do. She enjoyed exercising at the Armory, walking in nature and having coffee and conversations with her friends. Bernice loved her family, pets and the mountains. She was a strong believer in prayer. Bernice is survived by her daughter, Carol Gough, of Charlotte and a son, Ronald Gough, of Asheville. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 28, 2016 in the chapel of First Baptist Church of Waynesville with Reverend Dr. Robert Prince, III officiating. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 1:45 p.m. prior to services at the church. Serving as pallbearers will be Bud Cantrell, Larry Ammons, Ron Muse, Tom Roberts, Paul Rathbone, Bill Teague and honorary pallbearer will be Joe Kelley. Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.
