Bertha Sutton

Waynesville, Bertha Sue Caldwell Sutton, age 85, of Utah Mountain Road, passed away on Friday, September 24, 2010 at her residence. She was born and raised in Cataloochee Valley and was the daughter of the late Lush and Maggie Caldwell. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Cole Beliece Sutton, who died in 1991 and one brother, Riley B.Caldwell. Bertha was devoted to her family to the end of her life. She was a loving and thoughtful caregiver. Bertha was also a wonderful cook known for her delicious biscuits. She was a member of Maggie Valley First Baptist Church. She is survived by three daughters, Ann Jones and her husband, Harold, of Balsam, Mary Evelyn Goodson and her husband, Billy, of the Cove Creek community and Janie Coleen Rich, and her husband, Butch, of Parrottsville, Tennessee; two sons, William H. Sutton and his wife, Margie, and James Houston Sutton, of Maggie Valley; four sisters, Dorothy Messer of Mississippi, Irene Sutton of Maggie Valley, and Nettie Hannah and Sally Messer, both of Sutton Town Road; three brothers, Stokey and L.C. Caldwell, of Maggie Valley and Walt Caldwell of Coleman Mountain; 12 grandchildren, Mark and Kim Jones, Sherry McKinney, Denise Hannah, and Bobby, Forrest, Jason, Baron and Cassie Sutton, Luchina Rice, William Goodson, and Ken Rich; 9 great grandchildren, Riley Hannah, Jordan and Haley Blankenship, Lily Rice, C.J. and Alex Rich, Megan and Savannah Boynton, and Henry, Ella and Morgan Sutton; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 28, 2010 in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Gary Putnam and Reverend Jerry Nelson officiating. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 1:45 p.m. prior to services at the funeral home.
