Bertie Evelyn Cowan Ellington, age 81, passed away on Tuesday, September 16, 2014 at Haywood Regional Medical Center. She was born and raised in Burke County, North Carolina, spent 30 years in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina where she managed various motels. She resided four years in Kingston, Tennessee and lived the last six years in Haywood County. She was the daughter of the late Frank and Martha Jane Buckner Cowan and was a member of Bradbury United Methodist Church in Kingston, Tennessee. Bertie enjoyed gardening and crafts and was a wonderful cook. She loved people and was known for her kind and generous heart. Most important to her was her family. She was a loving mother, sister, and cherished most her title of "Nana". She is survived by two daughters, Debbie Elington Farmer of Kingston, Tennessee and Toni Ellington of New Bern, North Carolina; a son, Rick Ellington of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; three sisters, Edith Cowan Cole of Clyde, Mary Cowan Arrowood of Morganton, Barbara Cowan of Nebo; three grandchildren, Brad and Rick Farmer and Robin Price, Jr.; four great-grandchildren; Haylee and Brody Farmer and Alyssa and Ashton Price; and many beloved nieces and nephews and a host of special friends. A memorial service will be held to celebrate the life of Bertie Evelyn Ellington at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 28, 2014, at Bradbury United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 3:00 p.m. prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bradbury United Methodist Women, 3506 Buttermilk Road, Kingston, TN 37763 or to the American Cancer Society, 120 Executive Park, Building 1, Asheville, NC 28801.
