Bessie Allen

Waynesville-Bessie Mae Mathis Allen, age 75, of Sulphur Springs Road, died Monday, October 6, 2003 at Haywood Regional Medical Center.

A native of Haywood County, she was the daughter of late Ules A. and Cumi Levada Nelson Mathis. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Roxie Livingston and Cordelia Miller; and two brothers, J. B. and W. B. Mathis. She served as Sunday School teacher at High Street Baptist Church, in Canton and later at Hazelwood Baptist Church where she was a member.

She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Clyde C. Allen; a son, Reverend Clyde Calvin Allen, Jr. and his wife, Marianne, of Mt. Pleasant, SC; and three grandchildren, Allison, Alexis, and Matthew Allen of Mt. Pleasant, SC.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 9, 2003 in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Don Letzring and Reverend Virgil Holloway officiating. Burial will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Clyde. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 1:45 p.m. on Thursday prior to the service, at the funeral home. Serving as pallbearers will be Bob Allen, Roy Haynes, James High, Ernest Sutton, Kevin Cable, and Marti Scruggs.
