Waynesville, Bessie Mae Newman Burrus, age 92, of 82 Henson Drive, passed away on Sunday, April 26, 2015 at her residence. A native of Cherokee County, she had lived most of her life in Haywood County. She was the daughter of the late William E. and Lillie Adeline Wiggins and was also preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Jack Thomas Burrus, who died in 2008 and a sister, Nannie Ruth Patterson. Bessie was a member of Hazelwood Presbyterian Church and enjoyed quilting, making oak split baskets, and was an avid walker. Bessie is survived by a daughter, Martha B. Avery and her husband, Randall, of Athens, Georgia; a son, William B. Burrus and his wife, Kathy, of Waynesville; one sister, Dixie Aiken, of Ocoee, Tennessee; three grandchildren, Laura Cheek and her husband, Bo, of Atlanta, Georgia, Todd Avery and his wife, Haley, of Athens, Georgia, and Emily Burrus of Waynesville; and one great-grandson, Bennett Cheek. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, May 1, 2015 in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Patrick Womack officiating. Burial will follow at Crawford/Ray Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 11:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. on Friday prior to services at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.
