Waynesville, Bessie Jones Whitehouse, age 90, passed away on Saturday, April 29, 2017 at Silver Bluff Nursing Home. A native of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late Charles Harvey and Mae Ferguson Jones. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Robert Whitehouse, Sr. who died in 1990; three sisters; one brother; and an infant daughter. Bessie was a member of West Canton Baptist Church. She had a special zest for life and will be remembered for her "spunky" personality. Bessie enjoyed spending time in the outdoors fishing and also loved to dance. Bessie is survived by two sons, Steven Charles Poppas, and his wife, Vivian, and Gary Michael Poppas and his wife, Marianna, all of Canton; two step-children, James R. Whitehouse, Jr. of Grover, North Carolina and Judy Justice, and her husband, Tommy, of Waynesville; four grandchildren, Zoe Callard, of Nottingham, England, Angela Pless, Nathan Poppas and Aaron Poppas, all of Canton; twelve great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several other beloved extended family members and friends. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 2, 2017 in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Steve Pressley officiating. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. on Monday, May 1, 2017 at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville.
