Bettie Smathers

Canton- Bettie Hardin Smathers, age 86, passed away on Monday, November 17, 2014 at the Brian Center in Waynesville. She was a native and a lifelong resident of Haywood County and was the daughter of the late Charles and Mabel Myers Hardin. In addition to her parents, she was preceeded in death by a son, Jerry Carroll Smathers; a grandson, Michael Clayton "Clay" Smathers; two sisters, Margaret Craig and Josephine Smathers; two brothers, Dan and C.W. Hardin. Bettie was a retired insurance clerk at Mission Hospital with 27 years of service. She was a longtime member of Morning Star United Methodist Church. Being a grandmother was her best hobby. She loved to travel and her trips to Alaska and Branson Missouri were most memorable for her. Bettie is survived by her husband of 67 years, Frederick Hargrove Smathers; a son, Kermit Smathers and his wife, Kathy, of Canton; four grandchildren, Cole Smathers, Molly Carver and her husband, Chad, Matt Smathers and his wife, Brooke and Billy Carver and his wife, Mia; five great-grandchildren, Sadie and Charlotte Smathers, Hudson and Boone Carver and Lola Carver; and a daughter-in-law; Susan Smathers of Canton. The family wishes to acknowledge the loving and compassionate care given to Bettie at the Brian Center of Waynesville. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at Morning Star United Methodist Church with Reverend Nicole Jones and Reverend Doug Love officiating. Burial will follow at Morning Star Cemetery. The family will receive from 12:30 until 1:45 p.m. Wednesday prior to the services at the church.
