Betty Hurd

Canton – Betty Lee Russell Hurd, age 94, passed away on Saturday, June 6, 2015 at her residence in the North Hominy Community. A native and current resident of Haywood County, Betty had previously resided in Bethesda, Maryland and Simsbury, Connecticut, and was the daughter of the late Robert and Edith Phillips Russell. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Louis C. Hurd, who died in 1998; three brothers, Phil, Frank, and Billy Martin Russell. Betty received a Master's Degree of Music Education from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. She had a long career as choir director and organist with various churches retiring from the Canton Presbyterian Church. Betty was a member of Canton Central United Methodist Church and participated in the chancel choir and United Methodist Women. She was also a member of the Sigma Alpha Iota Music Fraternity and was a PEO sister. She is survived by a daughter, Leslie Roberts of Asheville; two sons, Phil Hurd (Beverly) of Baltimore, Maryland and Gary Hurd of North Hominy; a sister, Jean Adams of Lake Junaluska; nephews, Bob, Tom (Tana), and Kent (Linda) Adams; grandnephew, Frank Adams; four grandchildren, Nathaniel (Erin) and Caitlin Hurd and Andrew (Shelby) and Michael Roberts; a great-granddaughter, Emmerson Roberts; and a special cousin, Jim Crawford. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 28, 2015 at the Canton Central United Methodist Church with the Reverend Paul Brown. The family will receive friends following the service in the chapel. Memorials may be made to Canton Central United Methodist Choir Memorial Fund, 34 Church Street, Canton, NC 28716.
