Betty Lane

November 11, 1932 — December 2, 2009

Waynesville, Betty Jean Lane, age 77, of 88 Polk Street, died on Wednesday, December 2, 2009 at her residence. A native of Stanly County, NC, she had lived in Chicago, Houston, and Mt. Pleasant, MI before moving to Haywood County in 1972. She was the daughter of the late George W. and Pantha Griffin Plyler. She received her BA Degree from Catawba College in Salisbury, NC and was a retired teacher. Betty was an active member of NAMI as well as a peace activist, who was very concerned and worked for civil rights for many years. She was also an artist who enjoyed working with children and was an active member of First United Methodist Church of Waynesville. Betty always felt she was here on earth to help people and was one who loved talking to people and sharing ideas. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Daniel "Dan" Lane, Jr.; one son, Danny Lane and wife, Amy, of Hendersonville; two daughters, Angie Lane of Asheville and Carol Lane of Garden City, GA; one brother-in-law, Truman Barker, of Palm Beach Gardens, FL; three sisters, Janet Deal and her husband, Charlie, of Hobart, IN, Marika Mitchell and her husband, Ken, of Simms, Texas, and Georgia Appel and her husband, Marvin, of Rio Rancho, NM; and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 5, 2009 at First United Methodist Church of Waynesville with Reverend Sandy Giles officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to NAMI Western Carolina, P.O.
