"Loving Wife & Mother" Waynesville, Betty (Vesta) Pardue Thompson, of 332 Mundy Field Road, Canton, died at Autumn Care on June 26, 2016. She suffered a brain stem stroke in 2001 and as a result developed vascular dementia that claimed her life after many years of home care. Betty leaves to cherish her memory her husband, Bill, of 57 years. Bill provided excellent care to Betty as her health declined. No other couple loved and respected each other more than they did. One son, Ron (Mark) of Durham and her son-in-law, Arnold Brackett of Waynesville, also survive her. Her grandchildren are Tad and Tomi Thompson, Toni Brackett and Tiffany Rich (Chris). She has three great-grandchildren, Newt and Shelby Thompson and Eli Rich. Her mother, Nettie Pardue Freeman, daughter, Jane Brackett, and son, Gregory preceded Betty in death. Betty was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in the Dix Creek Community. She was a former Sunday School and Training Union teacher and church secretary and loved working with children. Betty is a 1950 graduate of Canton High School. Betty enjoyed work and being around people. Following graduation, she worked at Champion Papers until 1960. She returned back to work in 1972 when employed by Sky City in Waynesville and then owned and managed Pretzel Records in Canton. After Pretzels closed, she worked at Springdale Country Club and as store manager at Davis Mercantile in Canton. Those that knew her before her stroke remember her for her devotion to her husband and family, her commitment to her church and her love of life. She always did kind things for others and helped many friends and family through the years. She was a great cook and a great many enjoyed sitting at a table filled with her cooking. She will be remembered as a gracious Southern woman and professional salesperson. A celebration of remembrance will be held at Mt. Zion Baptist Church at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 29, 2016. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, 261 Dix Creek Road, Canton, NC 28716.
