Waynesville, William "Bill" Messer, age 67, of Hemphill Road, passed away on Friday, April 10, 2009 at Memorial Mission Hospital. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Glenn and Bonnie Almond Messer. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Charlie and Elmer Messer and a sister, Edith Woods. He worked for more than 30 years at Cataloochee Ranch and Ski Area. He was very devoted to his work and also owned and operated his own lawn care business and fishponds at his home. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Doris Messer; Bill Messer and his wife, Julie, James Silvers and his wife, Iris, and Ricky Messer; one daughter, Kelly Shelton and her husband, Kevin; two sisters, Carrie Sutton, and Glennie Sutton and her husband, Joe, all of Waynesville; four brothers, Everett Messer and his wife, Nina, Robert Messer and his wife, Lynn, and Hugh Messer, all of Waynesville, and Lewis Messer, of New Jersey; and seven grandchildren, Dillion, Albert, and Devan Messer, James Isaac Silvers, Austin and Greenlee Crowe, and Angela Raine Shelton. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, April 13, 2009 in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Jerry Nelson and Reverend Jim Johnson officiating. Burial will follow at Messer Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Daniel, Greg, Robert, and Julius Messer, and Mark and Dennis Sutton. The family will receive friends from Noon until 2:00 p.m. on Monday prior to services.
