Waynesville, Billy Lee Hyatt, age 81, passed away on Monday, July 31, 2017 at his residence.

A native of Swain County, he was the son of the late Joseph Woodrow and Elsie Parris Hyatt. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Robert, Carroll and Tommy Hyatt. Billy proudly served his country in the Air Force. In the early 60's along with his two brothers, Carroll and Tommy, Bill opened the Sanitary Barber Shop on Main Street in Waynesville. Billy was also an experienced truck driver, operating as an independent truck driver for twenty years. In 1996, Bill opened Bill's Barber Shop in Hazelwood. One of his proudest moments was being voted 2013 Reader's Choice Award - Best Barber. Bill's "one of a kind personality" will be missed. He was an active golfer, enjoyed fishing and in his earlier days loved drag racing.

Bill is survived by his wife of 60 years, Eula "Dean" Hyatt; two daughters, Melissa Leabhart, of Waynesville and Freda Wood, of Hudson, North Carolina; three sons, Billy Hyatt, and his wife, Cindy, Brent Hyatt, and his wife, Heather, all of Sylva and Brad Hyatt, and his wife, Mechele, of Lenoir; one sister, Shirley Usry, and her husband, Bob, of Raleigh; seven grandchildren, Jennifer and Jamie Hyatt, Hannah Hyatt, Jonathan Craig Leabhart, Nathaniel and Jacob Wood and Samantha LeClair; and six great-grandchildren. He loved his dog Princess and cat Radar.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 3, 2017 in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Lloyd Fish officiating. Burial will follow at Ratcliff Cove Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
