Billy Nelson

Billy Joe Nelson, age 77, of Putnam Road, died Wednesday, May 6, 2009, at his residence. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Corbet and Gertrude Swanger Nelson. He was preceded in death by a son, Ricky Nelson, who died in 1983; four brothers; and three sisters. He was employed with the Town of Canton for 32 years and was of the Baptist faith. Billy was an avid small game hunter. He also loved playing his guitar and banjo. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Cora Lee Nelson; a special son, Don Wingate and his wife, Sandra, and their children, Trina, Tiffany, Dustin, and Cody; a special daughter, Constance Teetzel; a sister, Kate Gentry; four grandchildren, Tiffany Malachowski, Joshua Parker, Candace Teetzel, and John Teetzel; and three great-grandchildren, Roger Manning, Senaka Parker, Raynna Malachowski. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 9, 2009, at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Michael Chastain and Reverend Johnny Chastain officiating. Burial will follow at Bon-A-Venture Cemetery, Old Clyde Road. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
