Maggie Valley, Blanche Marie Smolek Cira, age 84, passed away on Monday, August 1, 2011 at the John F. Keever Solace Center. A former resident of Tampa, Florida, she had resided in Haywood County for the past 20 years. She was the daughter of the late Benjamin R. and Bessie Marie Hulka Smolek. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Tony Cira; one sister, Mildred Krug, one brother, Ed Smolek, and her grandson, Ryan Simons. Blanche was actively involved in Special Olympics as an advanced coach and was also an avid gardener. Blanche will be remembered for her kind-hearted generous spirit and was loved by all who knew her. She attended New Covenant Church. She is survived by a son, Rick Cira, of Maggie Valley; one daughter, Sandi Simons-Crawford and her husband, Curtis, also of Maggie Valley; a brother, Emil Smolek and his wife, Dorothy, a brother-in-law, Clyde Krug, and a special nephew, Melvin Krug, all of North Judson; as well as several other nieces and nephews; and her special chocolate labs, Brodie and Callie. A memorial service will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 4, 2011 in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Robert Huttner officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services at the funeral home.
