Waynesville, Blanche Queen Swanger Mehaffey, age 86, of Old Balsam Road, went home to be with the Lord Sunday, November 6, 2011 at Silver Bluff Nursing Home. She was a native of Swain County and was the daughter of the late Harley and Lula Carver Queen. Blanche was preceded in death by her husband, James Herbert (Hub) Mehaffey, who passed away in 1993; an infant daughter, Anna Christine Swanger and a sister, Alice Curtis. Blanche enjoyed canning, gardening and bird watching. She was a member of Holly Grove Freewill Baptist Church. She is survived by her son, Jerome (Jay) Swanger and his wife, Joyce West Swanger, of Dawsonville, Georgia; two stepdaughters, Lois Mills and Dorothy Caldwell, both of Waynesville; and six grandchildren; Jeffry Swanger, Valerie Shortnacy, Michele Lowder all of Georgia; Ernie Ledford and his wife, Janice, of Tennessee; Kyle and Alesia Ledford both of Waynesville; eight great-grandchildren; two step grandchildren, Chuck Caldwell of Canton and Julie Stiles of Balsam; and two step great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 9, 2011 in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Jimmy Trantham officiating. Burial will follow at Dellwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. Serving as pallbearers will be great grandsons and friends. Memorials may be made to Meals on Wheels, 486 East Marshall Street, Waynesville, NC 28786.
