Bobbie Harpe Canton- Bobbie Jean Windham Harpe died on December 2, 2014 at her residence. She was born in Bay Springs, Mississippi and was the second daughter of the late Bacil Harold and Modane Shirley Windham. After attending school in Mississippi and Mobile, Alabama, she graduated from Huffsteller Business College. Mrs. Harpe was in the banking business in Memphis, Tennessee, where she met her husband of 62 years. She also lived in Warner Robins, Georgia while her husband served in the Air Force at Robins Air Force Base and then moved to Canton in 1957. She was a member of the N.C. Optometric Auxiliary where she served as Vice President. Mrs. Harpe was a Red Cross volunteer in the public school heath program, a health department volunteer where she worked in the Child Health Clinic performing Denver Developmental screening tests on children. She also served several years as a member of the State Committee of Citizens of Public Heath representing Western N.C. Bobbie was a member of Folkmoot USA Board of Directors for 18 years and served as treasurer of the Folkmoot Foundation. At the time, of her death she was a "Member Emeritus." She was active in school and the community and was the recipient of the Governors Community Leadership Award presented by Governor Jim Hunt in 1981. She was nominated again in 1984. Bobbie was a lifetime member of the Haywood County Hospital Auxiliary, serving as its president during the move to the new hospital. While president she served as secretary of the Hospice Board after it became a reality. She was a member of Central United Methodist Church for over 50 years, she served on the Administrative Board, Board of Trustees, was a Sunday-school teacher, youth director, president of United Methodist Women, circle leader, and active in many other groups and committees over the years. She is survived by her husband, Dr. Robert King Harpe; two sons, Michael King Harpe (Karen) and Robert Gilbert Harpe (Cindy); three grandsons, Jared King, Michael Cavin and Robert Taylor Harpe; two sisters, Helen Windham Dimoff of Mobile, Alabama and Virginia Windham Hughes (Alan) of Shelby, North Carolina; a brother, Jim Harold Windham (Joyce) of Barnwell, South Carolina; and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 5, 2014 at Canton Central United Methodist Church with Reverend Paul Brown and Reverend Matthew Burton officiating. The family will receive friends in the Fellowship Hall for a Celebration of Life immediately following the service. Burial will follow at Crawford/Ray Memorial Gardens. The family wishes to thank Amy Morgan and Marcy C. Scott for the special care they gave to Bobbie and her family. In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to Canton Central United Methodist Church.
