Bobby Canady

Maggie Valley-Bobby Dan Canady, 78, of 102 Hollow Drive, Maggie Valley, North Carolina, died Thursday, January 29, 2004 at his home.

His smiling face will be sadly missed; however, he would want to be remembered with laughter instead of tears.

Mr. Canady was born, September 18, 1925, in Fort Myers, Florida. He lived in Florida the majority of his life until he became a resident of Maggie Valley in 1991 upon his retirement. He joined the Navy out of high school in 1943 and served as a torpedo man until his discharge in 1946. He spent most of his life in the fishing industry where he began as a commercial fisherman in Fort Myers Beach, then as Captain of the shrimp trawler Cameron, and later as a bookkeeper for Singleton Shrimp Company at Fort Myers Beach. He was transferred to Tampa where he was Manager of their boats for 11 years, and then to Singleton Seafoods of Key West, where he retired as Vice President in 1991. His career with Singleton spanned 32 years in various capacities. For several years he was employed as Manager of Pinellas Seafood and also of King Shrimp Company, both in Key West. He served as President of Southeastern Fisheries in 1983-84.

He was the son of the late Daniel Webster Canady and Molsey Kennon Canady. He was the great grandson of a pioneer Florida family, the late William Henry "Bill" Brown and Sarah Jane Jernigan Brown of Immokalee, Florida. A brother, Gene Canady, and a sister Betty Jane Canady, preceded him in death.

He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Patricia Crant Canady, and his children, Marcia Davis, and husband, Carl, Key West, Florida; Robert Canady, Maggie Valley, North Carolina; Patrick Canady and wife, Allynda, Clyde, North Carolina; Theresa Alayon, Ocala, Florida; Sharon Cordy and husband, David, Tampa, Florida; and Kevin Canady and wife, Auriole, Hendersonville, Tennessee. Five grandchildren, and one sister, Josephine Hughes of Fort Myers, Florida. A nephew and a niece also survive him.

He was a member of St. Margaret Catholic Church in Maggie Valley.

A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, January 31, 2004, at 4:00 p.m. at St. Margaret's Catholic Church in Maggie Valley, with Father Francis J. Doyle officiating. Inurnment will follow at the Columbarium on the Church grounds.
In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated to the American Cancer Society, 90 Stiles Rd., Canton, NC 28716, or to HRMC Hospice, 560 Leroy George Dr., Clyde, NC 28721.

Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services of Waynesville is in charge of arrangements.
