Bobby Joe McElrath, age 76, passed away on Wednesday, July 11, 2012 at Mission Hospitals – Memorial Campus. He was born in Buncombe County and was a lifelong resident of Haywood County and the son of the late Moody Battle and Willa Belle Elliott McElrath. He retired from Southern Maintenance and was a member of Canton Wesleyan Church. He was a member of VFW Post #891 on Leicester Highway. Bobby was a talented woodworker and enjoyed reading, watching sports and especially adored all of his family. He was a very decorated 1st Class Petty Officer of the United States Navy serving during Operation Desert Storm. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Doris McElrath; two daughters, Robin Yazell of Syracuse, New York and Bobbi Young and her husband, David, of Bessemer City; a son, Jeff McElrath of Gastonia; step son, David Brown of the home; six sisters, Mary Reece and her husband, Max, of Warne, Barbara Miller and her husband, Terry, of Candler, Phyllis McElrath of Canton, Martha Pitts and her husband, Homer, of Candler, Audrey Worley of Acworth, Georgia, and Vicky Donaldson and her husband, Roger, of Hayesville; two brothers, Max Dale McElrath of Canton and Richard Cope of South Carolina; six grandchildren, Elle and Ian Yazell, Abby Young, and Jeffrey, Sara, and Allison McElrath; a great-grandchild, Chandler Young; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 14, 2012 at Canton Wesleyan Church with the Reverend Terry Penland officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church. Military honors will be conducted at the conclusion of the service at the church. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the N M C B 24, Det. 1324. Memorials may be made to the National Kidney Foundation, 4819 Park Road, Suite C, Charlotte, NC 28209-3842.
