Brainard Monroe Burrus, age 87, died on Wednesday, February 2, 2011, at Mission Hospitals – Memorial Campus. Brainard was born in Mooresboro, NC and lived most of his life in Haywood County. He was the son of the late Samuel Brainard and Annie Lovelace Burrus and was preceded in death by a sister, Marjorie Burrus Fuller. He was a graduate of UNC - Chapel Hill School of Pharmacy class of 1948. He was a member of Canton First Baptist Church where he was a former deacon and member of the Finance Committee. Brainard began working at Professional Drug Store in Sylva; became owner of Martin's Drug Store in Canton; and was a founding partner of Midway Medical Center and Midway Pharmacy. He was a former member of the Canton Lions Club, VFW, and the American Legion; and past board member of First Union Bank. He was a United States Army Veteran serving in the 75th Infantry during World War II at the Battle of the Bulge and was a Purple Heart and Bronze Star recipient. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Margaret Harkins Burrus, two sons Samuel Brainard Burrus II and his wife, Mary Foster Burrus, of Canton and Stephen Anthony Burrus and his wife, Barbara Revis Burrus, of Durham, NC; a daughter, Jan Lovelace Burrus of Alexandria, VA; a sister, Blanche Burrus Clark of Chapel Hill; three grandchildren, Clara Ray Burrus, Brainard Monroe Burrus II, and Madeleine Rachel Meiyu Burrus; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 5, 2011, at Canton First Baptist Church with the Reverend Jay Meadows and Reverend Dr. Jim Langford officiating and with Dr. Ernest Stines delivering the eulogy. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Friday at Wells Funeral Home of Canton.
