Waynesville, Brownlow Clayborne "B. C." Nave, Jr., age 89, passed away on Monday, April 5, 2010 at Memorial Mission Hospital. A native of Avery County, he was a former resident of New Jersey, Marion, and Cashiers, but had spent most of his life in Haywood County. He was the son of the late Brownlow Clayborne Nave, Sr. and Ethel Nave Banner. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Fannie Mae Galloway Nave, who died in 2007; stepfather, Finley Banner; and stepsister, Nanette Whitson. He was a World War II veteran, having served in Central Europe, in the Battle of the Bulge, and along the Rhine River. He attended Lees-McRae College and later earned his Bachelor's Degree in Biology and Agriculture/Horticulture at NC State University. He taught classes in McDowell, Jackson, and Haywood County School Systems. His tenure included the former Bethel High School and Pisgah High School, where he retired after 42 years of teaching. He was an active member of Ratcliffe Cove Baptist Church where he had previously taught Sunday-School. He was very active in the FFA and coached basketball in his early years in McDowell County and Glenville, NC. He was also a member of the Pigeon Valley Lions Club and treasured his cat companion, "Itsey." He is survived by two daughters, Meredith Nave Baker and her husband, Harold McGaha, of Clyde and Sherri Nave Arrington and her husband, Joe, of the Crabtree community; three grandchildren, Lonnie Nave Buchanan of Coalville, Utah, Shanne Austin Baker of the Bethel community, and Calan Nave Arrington of the Crabtree community; and six great grandchildren, Lonnie, Frank, Elizabeth, and Jessica of Coalville, Utah and Branson and Jacob Baker of the Bethel community. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 8, 2010 in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Jay T. Jones and Reverend Claude Conard officiating. Burial will follow at Ratcliffe Cove Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Terry Dillard, Wade Francis, Ronnie Gillett, Terry Haney, Jim Parton, Alexander Robb, Jerry Smith, and Bill Teague. The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. prior to the service and at other times, at the residence of B.C. Nave. Memorials may be made to Ratcliffe Cove Baptist Church or Ratcliffe Cove Cemetery Fund, 1300 Ratcliffe Cove Road, Waynesville, NC 28786 or Haywood County Schools Foundation, 1230 North Main Street, Waynesville, NC 28786.
