Bruce Baxter Burleson

Bruce Baxter Burleson, born on November 24, 1953, in Hawaii, passed away at his residence on January 6, 2025, at the age of 71. A distinguished veteran, he retired as a Lieutenant Colonel with the United States Army 2001, following a notable career that included active duty in the United States Air Force and active service as a map maker under General H. Norman Schwarzkopf during the Gulf War.

Bruce exemplified dedication and commitment, both in his military service and professional life. After his military career, he worked at Digitech and most recently with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), contributing his expertise in engineering and computer science. He received his education from Western Carolina University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering and a master’s degree in computer science, following his graduation from Owen's High School.

In addition to his professional endeavors, Bruce was an avid guitar player and cherished his time with his beloved cat, George. He was an active member of Antioch Baptist Church, where he found community and support. His interests and activities reflected not only his passion for music but also his deep-rooted values of family and fellowship.

Bruce is survived by his mother-in-law, Gertrude Fullbright; a brother in law John Fullbright; his nieces that he claimed as his daughters, Krista King (Nicholas King) of Ellenboro, NC and Amy Garner (Benjamin Garner) of Waynesville, NC; great-nieces Madeline King of Raleigh, NC, Josie Edwards (Zane Edwards) of Waynesville, NC, and Lydia King of Ellenboro, NC; as well as a great-nephew, Jeb Garner that he claimed as his grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Pheobe Burleson, father, Reginald Burleson; his mother, Mary Bradley Burleson; his aunt, Anna Bradley; his uncle, Henry Bradley; and his sister-in-law, Diane Baker (David Baker).

A funeral service will be held at Panther Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Clyde, North Carolina, on Sunday, January 19th, 2025, at 3:00 p.m. Family wishes to have a private burial with Military Honors rendered.

The care of Mr. Burleson has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville
