Vernon Dwight "Bud" Sharpe, 82, of 23 Maple Street, Clyde, NC went to be with His Lord, Monday, February 28, 2011, following a short period of declining health. A native of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Dumont and Jessie Miller Sharp of Canton. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Virginia Medford Sharpe, who died September 5, 2010 and two sisters, Helen Sharp Thornton and Doris Sharp Mehaffey. "Bud" joined the United States Navy in 1946 and served in World War II. After he completed his tour in 1948, he returned to Canton and attended Canton High School. He worked for 46 years at Champion International of which seven of those years were spent at the Champion plant in Texas. He was a member of Clyde Central United Methodist Church and was a member of the church men's club. He was a former member of the Clyde Fire Department and of the Clyde Lions Club. He also served for several years on the Canton, Bethel, and Clyde United Way Board of Directors and was a Santa Pal at the plant for many years. At one time, Bud owned and operated a service station in Clyde. He is survived by one sister, Edith Jo Ann York and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 5, 2011, at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Mike Leatherwood and Reverend James Hart officiating. Full military honors will be held at the graveside at Crawford/Ray Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Clyde Central United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 8, Clyde, NC 28721.
