Buddy Glance

Buddy "Old Grouch" Roger Glance, age 75, passed away on Wednesday, June 27, 2012 at Charles George VA Medical Center in Asheville. A native of Haywood County, he was a son of the late Vincent M. Glance and Mellie Rogers Glance. Buddy was a 1954 graduate of Canton High School and he received a Bachelor's degree in political science from Wake Forest University in 1958. Buddy was a United States Air Force veteran. He had a love for military history especially an affinity for World War II which led to his desire to open his own military surplus store, "Old Grouch's Military Surplus" in Clyde. Buddy was dedicated to helping veterans and was a member of the American Legion Post #47. Buddy had a deep love for his family and will be missed by all his friends of whom he had many. He especially loved the Western North Carolina Mountains and was proud to call them home. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Mary Furgal Glance; two sons, Timothy Roger Glance and his wife, Katie, of Hendersonville, and Jacob Michael Glance of Canton; and a special cousin, Wilene Brooks of Candler. Due to the renovation construction of the Canton facility, funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 2, 2012 in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Clay J. Morgan officiating. Burial will follow at Bon-A-Venture Cemetery on Old Clyde Road with military graveside rites. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Sunday evening at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Haywood County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 1275, Canton, NC 28716 or to the Veterans Restoration Quarters and Transitional Housing, 1329 Tunnel Road, Asheville, NC 28805.
