Waynesville, James Buford Burchfield, age 98, of Lenwood Drive, passed away on Monday, July 14, 2014 at his residence. A native of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Lon and Sally Rogers Burchfield. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Louise Christopher, two sisters, and five brothers. He worked in the shipyard in New Port News, Virginia during World War II and later retired from Dayco with 34 years of service. He enjoyed repairing small engines and tending to his garden. Buford was a member of New Hope Church of God where he served as a Sunday-school teacher and deacon. Throughout his wonderful life of faithfully serving his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Buford was known for his genuine smile and kind heart. Buford is survived by his wife of 73 years, Gladys Barker Burchfield; two grandchildren, Greg Christopher and his wife, Sherri and Sherri Christopher Green and her husband, John; and six great-grandchildren, Emily Christopher, James Green, Chad Christopher, Luke Green, Logan Green, and Abigail Christopher. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 17, 2014 in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville with Reverend Alan Greene and Reverend Bobby Haney officiating. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park with his great-grandchildren serving as pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. prior to services at the funeral home.
