Waynesville, Burton Clinton "Clint" Smith, Sr., age 97, passed away on Tuesday, November 17, 2015 at Autumn Care. Born in Cowpens, South Carolina on September 11, 1918, he was the son of the late William Clinton and Bertha Louise Porter Smith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret "Bobbie" Martin Smith, who died in 1996, and brothers and sisters, John Porter Smith, Martha Frances Smith, Doris Smith Giles, Mendel Hoke Smith, William Edgar Smith, Bertha Louise Smith Cain (twin sister) and Elizabeth Smith Hadden. He graduated from Furman University in 1939. Clint served as a Lieutenant in the US Army Air Corp and as Captain in the US Army Air Force during World War II, receiving the Silver Star, Purple Heart and Air Medal. He flew 50 combat missions as pilot of A-20 Havocs over North Africa, Sicily and Italy and later served as commander of the US Army Air Force's Weather Wing stationed in Asheville. He was employed in sales and management from 1945–1965 with the Burroughs Corporation, was co-founder and owner of PDQ Foodstores from 1965–1972 and from 1986–1993, owned Milne Industrial Services. He was a member of Cruso United Methodist Church. Clint is survived by a son, Burton C. Smith, Jr. and his wife, Carol, of Waynesville; grandson, Paul Clinton Robertson Smith (Danielle Fredendall Smith) of Wilson, Wyoming; granddaughter, Margaret Haupt Radford (Kenneth Carter Radford) of Mooresville, North Carolina; sisters-in-law, Marjorie A. Smith and Betty Jane Martin; nieces and nephews, Carole Giles Hughes (John E. Hughes), Henry Clyde Giles (Nancy M. Giles), Mildred Smith Horne, Martha Porter Smith Stroup (Rodger Stroup), W. Clint Smith, William E. Smith (Laura Smith); and many great nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 28, 2015 at First United Methodist Church of Waynesville with Dr. John E. Hughes officiating. The family will receive friends from 3:00 p.m. until service time at the church. Memorials may be made in honor of Clint and Bobbie Smith to the Alzheimer's Association, 3800 Shamrock Dr., Charlotte, NC 28215 (marked for Haywood County Memory Walk).
