Waynesville-C. Jack Arrington, age 82, of 48 Sheriff Drive, died on Sunday, July 23, 2006 at Haywood Regional Medical Center. A native of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Cicero and Myrtle Whitner Arrington. He was also preceded in death by a son, Stephen Arrington; two sisters, Margaret Morgan and Dorothy Wolfe; and two brothers, Albert and Charles Arrington. He graduated from Waynesville Township High School where he played football. He graduated from Western Carolina Teachers College where he received a double major and served as senior class president and played football. He was a US Navy veteran of World War II, having served in the Pacific Theater as a surgical assistant and was a member of VFW Post 5202 and American Legion Post 47. He was later employed with the Haywood County School System as a teacher for Bethel High School. Jack began his law enforcement career working with the North Carolina Highway Patrol. He later was employed as Haywood County's Health Inspector for eleven years before being appointed to the office of sheriff by the county commissioners. He was then elected Sheriff of Haywood County by the people and served 23 years before retiring. Rufus Edmisten appointed him honorary attorney general in 1982. He was a Mason, a trustee at Western Carolina University, and a member of NCFOP Haywood Lodge 16, of which he was a charter member. He was also a member and trustee of Elizabeth Chapel United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Lillian Turner Arrington; one daughter, Mary Arrington; two sons, Jack T. Arrington of Canton and C. Joe Arrington and wife, Sherri, of the Crabtree Community; four grandchildren, Benjamin, Calan, Jessica, and Jasmine; and three great grandchildren, Marcus, Kiery, and Kobe. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 27, 2006 in the auditorium of Haywood Community College with Reverend Michael A. Shuford and Bishop Russell Brown officiating. Burial will follow at Ratcliff Cove Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday evening at Elizabeth Chapel United Methodist Church. Serving as pallbearers will be Dean Henline, Doug Earley, Jim Mackey, Albert Allen, Tom Parris, Tom Alexander, and Ben Parker. Honorary pallbearers will be David Inman, Jim Parton, Roger Reeves, Floyd Fulbright, Grady McCarter, Ricky Blanton, Stan Henry, Hugh Constance, Baron Clark, David Massie, William Arrington, David Clement, and Waynesville Mason Lodge No. 259.
