Waynesville, Calvin Spurgeon Medford, 93, passed away on Saturday, February 17, 2018, at Harris Regional Hospital in Sylva.
A native of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Urby Wesley and Caddie Warren Medford. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by four sisters, Kate Smathers, Sybil Roberts, Rose Ellen Hames and Lura Mae West; and three brothers, Paul, Lane and Joe Medford. Calvin proudly served his country in the United States Army and fought in the Battle of the Bulge and the campaign into Germany. He retired from Champion International Paper with 38 years of service and rose to the level of foreman. Calvin was a member of Calvary Road Baptist Church for 35 years. Generous, industrious and a man of faith would succinctly describe Calvin. He had a wonderful sense of humor and a deep love for the outdoors as he loved to hike. Calvin was an avid reader, dry fly fisherman, and had a passion for carpentry. He was a compassionate husband, father, and grandfather who will be greatly missed.
Calvin is survived by his wife of 38 years, Betty Medford; son, Michael Medford, and his wife, Marti, of Raleigh, North Carolina; daughter, Lynn Medford, and her husband, Jeff Leen, of Edgewater, Maryland; three sisters, Maxine Liverman, and husband, Bud, of Asheville, Louise Miller, and her husband, Cecil and Thelma Inman, all of Canton; one brother, Dalton Medford, and his wife, Alene, of Granite Falls, North Carolina; two grandchildren, Hannah Branigan and Zack Medford; and four great-grandchildren, Harper Branigan and Noah, Nathan and Jacob Medford.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 21, 2018, at Calvary Road Baptist Church in Waynesville with the Reverend John Swanger, III and the Reverend Mark Golden officiating. Burial will follow at Morning Star Cemetery in Canton. The family will receive friends from 12:00 until 2:00 p.m. at Calvary Road Baptist Church, prior to the service.
