Carl Gillis

Clyde – Carl Milton Gillis, age 89, passed away on Tuesday, May 5, 2015 at Haywood Regional Medical Center. A native and resident of Haywood County most of his life, he was the son of the late Arthur J. and Nora Underwood Gillis. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Martha Mease Gillis who passed away in 2009; two brothers and two sisters. He was a graduate of Canton High School and attended Blanton's Business College. Carl was the City Executive of the Canton branch of First Union National Bank from which he retired in 1986 with 40 years of service. He was a member of Clyde Central United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Canton Civitan Club and former member of the board of trustees of Haywood Community College. Additionally, Carl was a veteran of the US Army serving during World War II and was a member of the VFW. He is survived by one daughter, Patricia Ann Gillis of Clyde; a son, Paul Douglas Gillis and his wife, Robyn, of Taylors, SC; two grandchildren, John Paul Gillis and his wife, Brittney, and Carlyle Gillis of Greenville, South Carolina. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 9, 2015 at Bon-A-Venture Cemetery, Old Clyde Road with the Reverend Daniel Gaddy and Reverend James Hart officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Clyde Central United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 8, Clyde, NC 28721 or to one's favorite charity.
